Figured Bass and Tonality Recognition
نویسنده
چکیده
In the course of the WedelMusic project [15], we are currently implementing retrieval engines based on musical content automatically extracted from a musical score. By musical content, we mean not only main melodic motives, but also harmony, or tonality. In this paper, we first review previous research in the domain of harmonic analysis of tonal music. We then present a method for automated harmonic analysis of a music score based on the extraction of a figured bass. The figured bass is determined by means of a template-matching algorithm, where templates for chords can be entirely and easily redefined by the end-user. We also address the problem of tonality recognition with a simple algorithm based on the figured bass. Limitations of the method are discussed. Results are shown and compared to previous research. Finally, potential uses for Music Information Retrieval are discussed.

seventeenth-century harmonic theory and practice in “Composition Before Rameau: Harmony, Figured Bass, and Style in the Baroque,” College Music Symposium, 24/2 (fall 1984):
How did tonal music originate? An investiagion of the form and tonal structure of some early Baroque keyboard works suggests some insights not only into one of the primary questions of historical musicology but into how we understand tonality itself. Italian composers of the early seventeenth century recognized that the stile moderno and the seconda pratica stood in contrast to older types of c...
متن کاملFigured Bass , Chorale Harmonization , and the Economies of Chordal Progression
This article examines Schoenberg’s Harmonielehre as a text shaped by the influence of Central European science and politics. In accord with a severely economical approach to his subject, Schoenberg’s critique of figured bass and chorale harmonization is compared with Ernst Mach’s writings on scientific method. In support of this comparison, the article addresses the role played in Schoenberg’s ...
متن کاملA Computational Model of Tonality Cognition Based on Prime Factor Representation of Frequency Ratios and Its Application
We present a computational model of tonality cognition derived from physical and cognitive principles on the frequency ratios of consonant intervals. The proposed model, which we call the Prime Factor-based Generalized Tonnetz (PFG Tonnetz), is based on the Prime Factor Representation of frequency ratios and can be regarded as a generalization of the Tonnetz. Our assumed application of the PFG ...
متن کاملRhythm and Tonality in Children's Recognition of Intact and Distorted Melodies
ABSTRACT Five-to-10-year-old children identified familiar melodies presented in three ways: intact, wandering with the same key, or wandering outside the key. Previous work with rhythmically uniform melodies had shown a regular developmental progression in the use of contour, tonality, and exact pitch intervals in melody identification. In this study, with rhythmically distinctive melodies, per...
متن کاملAutomatic Chord Recognition Based on Probabilistic Integration of Chord Transition and Bass Pitch Estimation
This paper presents a method that identifies musical chords in polyphonic musical signals. As musical chords mainly represent the harmony of music and are related to other musical elements such as melody and rhythm, the performance of chord recognition should improve if this interrelationship is taken into consideration. Nevertheless, this interrelationship has not been utilized in the literatu...
